Gender-Related Impacts and the Work of the International Agricultural Research Centers

The satisfaction of aggregate food needs implies not only that the work of the international agricultural research centers (IARCs) lead to the creation of an output surplus but also that the distribution of food and income be such that malnutrition and hunger are reduced. It is becoming increasingly evident that these goals cannot be achieved if women's roles in production and food systems are not taken into account. There is a growing volume of documented examples of gender-specific varietal preferences, determined by the particular roles, tasks and responsibilities of men and women.
