Information on births of Hispanic parentage in 1983 and 1984 was available for 23 States and the District of Columbia in 1984, 346,986 births to mothers of Hispanic origin were reported in those States. The areas that incorporated an item on the birth certificate requesting the Hispanic or ethnic origin of the mother and father were Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Temessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. More than 92 percent of the total U.S. Hispanic population resided in these States in 1984. Consequently, the data in this report are considered to reflect nearly complete coverage of the Hispanic population in this country, even though the reporting area is restricted to 23 States and the District of Columbia.
