Suitability of Consumers' Assessments of Physician and Hospital Performance as Indicators of the Quality of Care

The Office of Technology Assessment reviewed the suitability of data provided by consumers as indicators of quality of care for individual physicians and hospitals. 'Quality of care' refers to the worth or excellence of various attributes of medical care. A literature review was conducted and led to the conclusion that it is possible to construct valid consumer-based indicators of quality of care.
