In-Plane Strengths of Steel Columns and Beam-Columns

摘要

The paper demonstrates quantitatively the relationships between the residual stresses and initial crookednesses of real steel columns and their strengths as formulated by modern limit state design codes. This is done by extending to I-sections a recent study of steel column buckling, post-buckling, and bending, which developed a simple computational model for predicting the effects of residual stresses and initial crookednesses in columns with realistic material properties. Following this, the maximum strengths of real steel I-section beam-columns which fail in the plane of bending are studied, and the results of this are used to investigate the consistency of recent design code formulations of beam-column strength.
