During the past reporting period, the contractors continued to perform surveillance for respiratory virus infections, and added surveillance for acute viral gastrointestinal disease. During the period, a large scale field trial of a live attenuated rotavirus vaccine (RRV-1) was carried out in 2-4 month old infants, and the results are reported herein. Studies of live attenuated influenza A vaccines were continued. These included evaluation of single gene reassortants, and studies of influenza A avian reassortant vaccines. Studies comparing the protection provided by live attenuated and inactivated vaccine were begun, examining results in high risk populations as well as in normal volunteers. Studies of the role of rimantadine in the treatment of naturally acquired influenza in young adults, evaluating two different doses of rimantadine, were conducted.
