The Bridge Design System (BDS) is used to design bridges that are most commonly used on the highway system in the State of Michigan. BDS is written in FORTRAN IV and it has been placed in the Burrough's A-15 computer system. The system is in use since 1970 and is considered to be one of the best in the U.S.A. In 1984 the Design Division of MDOT approved 'HP&R' funds to complete the documentation of BDS.
