Archaeological Inventory of Selected Sample Transects on the Fort Carson Military Reservation, El Paso, Fremont and Pueblo Counties, Colorado

A cultural resources inventory was conducted of four 400-meter-wide sample transects on the Fort Carson Military Reservation, Colorado, in order to test preliminary models of prehistoric site location. These models were developed as part of a base-wide Historic Preservation Plan. Fifteen sites and 12 isolated finds were recorded. Prehistoric sites include open lithic scatters with and without ground stone and hearths, a rock shelter with bedrock metates, a rock shelter with stone and log structure, wickiups, and stone circles. Ages of dated prehistoric sites range from Early to Middle Ceramic; the Late Ceramic (Protohistoric) period may also be represented. Historic sites consist of standing structures, dugouts, corrals, and refuse associated with early-to-mid 20th century homesteading and ranching. Isolated finds consist of undated prehistoric lithic and ground stone artifacts. Five sites, all prehistoric, are assessed as significant per criteria of the National Register of Historic Places.
