The author investigates electromagnetic scattering problems as indicated in transient plane-wave scattering by an inhomogeneous, lossy dielectric obstacle embedded in vacuum. As far as the direct-scattering problem is concerned, the authors will concentrate on transient plane-wave scattering by one- and two-dimensional, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacles. In the inverse case, the discussion is limited to the class of one-dimensional problems. Thanks to these restrictions, the authors have been able to investigate the analytical as well as the computational aspects of a number of solution techniques in full detail. In formulating these solution techniques, on the other hand, the authors have attempted to preserve their capability of being generalized to more complicated geometries.
