Technical Assistance by a County Forester to Nonindustrial Forest Owners in Mississippi

The service forester program is the primary public technical assistance program for nonindustrial forest landowners. In Mississippi, the county foresters provide this service. An examination of the activities of one county forester for a 3-year period revealed that over half the forester's time was spent providing technical assistance, and nearly one-third more was used to arrange financial aid for the forestry practices prescribed. An average of 144 landowner contacts were made each year. Studies of administrative records kept by the county forester showed the purposes of the contacts, the kinds of assistance provided, the characteristics of the landowners assisted, the forest practices accomplished, the acreage covered, who did the work, and how the work was financed.
