Analysis of User Requests for Division of Health Care Statistics Data and Publications, 1980-1985

The project evaluated the analytical practices and policies underlying the Division of Health Care Statistics (DHCS), NCHS reports so as to determine how effectively questions regarding health care utilization are being answered. Specifically, the project evaluated current DHCS analytical policies in terms of timeliness, problem orientation, analysis, and presentation. The study analyzed requests received by the DHCS during the period 1980-85, interviewed Health Policy Analysts, and utilized a Consultant Panel to determine current user needs and policy issues to be addressed. Deliverables from the study include 4 Technical Reports-(1) analyzing user requests; (2) reviewing alternative sources of health care data; (3) evaluating coverage of major health care issues; and (4) evaluating analytical potential of DHCS data- and a Final Report. Twenty-seven recommendations regarding analytical potential of the current DHCS surveys and suggested changes in future surveys are presented and discussed in the Final Report. These recommendations cover DHCS publications and policies, survey design and logistics, and analytic practices.
