Artificial Intelligence for the Statistical Design of Experiments. Phase 1

The primary objective of the project was to examine the linkage between artificial intelligence and mathematical statistics. In particular, the research concerned the needs of physicians and biologists who must contend with the statistical design of biomedical studies but who don't have access to experienced biostatisticians. The techniques used were those of knowledge engineering to obtain the expertise of the statistician and the capabilities of an expert system shell to provide the necessary inference engine. Researchers chose a few important types of biomedical studies, synthesized some of the vast statistical literature on how to design such studies, and wrote a microcomputer-based expert system to assist the user in the choice of design parameters and to perform the relevant numerical calculations.
