摘要

An intensive archaeological survey was conducted along a 25.8 mile segment of Wyoming Forest Highway 11 in the Sierra Madre Mountains, southern Carbon County, Wyoming. Twenty-one sites, 12 isolated finds, and 60 aspen carving localities were recorded. Twenty sites are historic and one is prehistoric. Most historic sites and isolates date to the principal period of copper mining in the area, ca. 1890-1910; however, the period 1910- present is also represented. The single prehistoric site (48CR4228), the only site that was test excavated, is a small lithic and ground stone scatter of unknown age. Aspen carving localities span the period 1905 to the present. The majority were left by Spanish-surnamed sheepherders from northern New Mexico. Three sites are regarded as meeting the eligibility requirements of the National Register of Historic Places. They are: the Battle townsite (48CR1209), the Copperton townsite (48CR1210), and the Gertrude Mine (48CR4467).
