Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon Contamination in Sediments from Coastal Waters of Southern California (Revised March 1987)

The study was designed to sample sediment from Santa Monica Bay to San Diego Bay suspected of containing high amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons. The sites included a reference station (San Mateo Point) and several river stations to provide a wider view of the range of contaminant levels in the region. The primary objective of the study was therefore to confirm analytical data on PAH concentrations reported in previous studies at a few stations and to extend the survey to many sites receiving non-point source inputs of contaminants. These results will provide an overview of the relative nature of PAH contamination at 24 sites in southern California receiving a wide range of contaminant inputs and allow the State Water Resources Board and the Regional Water Quality Control Boards to focus their concern on sites requiring further investigation.
