Impact of Prospective Payment on Medical Record Practitioners: A Follow-Up Study in 1986

The prospective payment system has created a new regulatory environment with significant impact on the hospital industry. The centrality of the patient medical record in assigning patients to diagnosis related groups (DRGs) focuses much of this attention on the medical record department. In 1985 the American Medical Record Association funded a study to assess the early effects of prospective payment implementation on medical record practitioners. A follow-up study was conducted in the Summer of 1986 to assess the impact of the prospective payment system on medical record departments.
