New Models for Distance Education in the Developing World

A.I.D.'s Rural Satellite Program promotes the innovative use of telephone-based audioconferencing ('distance teaching') to meet Third World needs for higher education. The report reviews pilot projects implemented under the Program by the Eastern Islands Universities Association in Indonesia and by the University of the West Indies. Both projects were largely successful, especially among more mature students, although locally taught courses continued to be preferred. The provision of materials proved a positive factor in the West Indies. The lessons learned from these pilot projects are discussed.
