Traffic safety in and around bends on highways outside built-up areas requires special attention. Accidents at bends are usually single accidents. Accidents with oncoming traffic also occur as well. Problems arise especially when it is dark and when it is raining. These accidents are mainly caused by vehicles changing course, which can be explained by problems in executing the driving maneuver. A survey of the literature has shown that these problems are rather complex. Results from different studies are not always uniform. Information at and around bends should be attuned to the driving maneuvers required of the driver and the driver's expectations. The driver must be informed in time of coming bends and also of their length and degree of curvature so that he can make the necessary changes in his speed and steering. Recommendations are given for the signing and road marking for bends in roads with a speed limit of 80 KM/H, and with a radius of curvature which does not satisfy minimum specifications.
