The report presents the results of research assessing the reliability and validity of the Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (AEP) and the Standardized Medreview Instrument (SMI). These instruments are used by third party payors to determine the appropriateness of admissions and days of care in acute care hospitals. The AEP was found to be reliable, but validity tests indicated that it overestimated non-acute admissions and days. The SMI was found to be unreliable, and thus, its validity was not tested.
