Technical Developments in the Casting Production of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company

No. 2 Steelmaking Works of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company is equipped with three 50 ton LD converters and three Concast single strand slab casters, the firstlings, introduced from abroad. It has a capacity of 1.5 million tons steel per year. About 1.2 million tons steel were designed to be cast as slabs and the rest to be poured into ingots. The curve radius of the slab casters is 10,300 mm and the mold length is 700 mm. The strand metallurgical length is 21,930 mm. The slab thickness is 170 mm, 210 mm and 250 mm and the width is 700 mm to 1,600 mm. The most ordered slabs are 210 x 1,300 mm and 210 x 1,550 mm. The main steel grades produced in this works are low carbon steel, low alloy steel and silicon steel. Three casters have been put into operation since October 25, 1978. The paper mainly deals with the casting operation practice and the technical progress made in variety and quality.
