Passive Microwave Observing from Environmental Satellites, a Status Report Based on NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's) June 1-4, 1987 Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia

The conference focused on the use of microwave sensors on meteorological satellites. The conference was divided into two main areas. The first half of the conference presented the status and work that is on-going with various microwave sensors flying on the NOAA and DoD's DMSP polar orbiting satellites with emphasis on the microwave sounders. The second half of the conference was tasked to establish the requirements for a geostationary microwave sounder and how, when, and the wherefore of getting one on a spacecraft. The report contains the final versions of the papers and discussions presented at the conference. Section I of the report presents the opening addresses to the conference. Section II presents all of the work and research that has been done on the microwave instruments in polar orbit. The work covers three main instruments, the Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit (AMSU) onboard NOAA-K, the Special Sensor Microwave/Temperature (SSM/T) sounder onboard the DMSP satellite, and the SSM/I microwave imager, also onboard the DMSP satellite system. Section III presents the papers relative to a microwave sounder for a geostationary orbit. Section IV contains three papers summarizing the three workshops held on the geostationary microwave instrument. Section V contains the list of attendees at the Conference.
