Young Unwed Fathers: Research Review, Policy Dilemmas and Options. Volume 1. Summary Report. Volume 2. Commissioned Papers

For the project a wide range of data about young unwed fathers (including men up to the age of 25) was synthesized, reviewed and discussed. The project included 10 working papers and a symposium, which was held October 1-3, 1986, in Washington D.C. Volume I of the report synthesizes the major findings of the papers and symposium discussions. It identifies program and policy issues, dilemmas, and options, and summarizes the questions needing further research. Some of the program and policy findings concern: (1) paternity establishment; (2) child support; (3) the aid to families with dependent children (ADFC) program; (4) job training and employment programs; and (5) adolescent pregnancy and parenting programs. One of the conclusions widely shared by project participants is that unwed fathers need to be held responsible for their children and should be required to legally establish paternity and pay financial support. Appendices include: (1) summaries of commissioned papers; (2) child support and young unwed parents; (3) welfare and young unwed parents; and (4) the adolescent family life demonstration projects: Program and evaluation summaries. The list of participants and attendees and the agenda from the symposium are also included.
