Almost the entire ceramics industry and a portion of the metals industry rely on the use of high temperatures to effect densification of powder preforms (sintering). Many of these materials are sintered in electrically heated furnaces. The development and implementation of gas-fired heating systems in these growing industries could potentially increase natural gas usage. The project was designed to determine the technical requirements for gas-fired sintering technology in these industries and to assess the potential for implementing such a technology.
