A fast and accurate method is presented for solving electromagnetic, time-domain, direct-scattering problems. Both theory and numerical implementations are discussed. The theory is explained on the basis of scattering problems for a inhomogeneous, lossy dielectric slab embedded in vacuum. For this one-dimensional situation, a recurrent scheme can be derived. Then the theory is extended to a more general case; namely, scattering problems for a slab in between two homogeneous, lossless half-spaces. Finally, some representative numerical results are presented.
