Evaluation of the Modified Motorcycle Operator Skill Test Exercises

Evaluations of the Motorcycle Operator Skill Test (MOST) indicate that, while the skills it assesses are critical to safe motorcycle operation, the effectiveness of the test in measuring the skills as well as the administrative requirements imposed by the skills make its use questionable. The objective of the effort described in the report was to modify the exercises of the MOST in order to improve their effectiveness and reduce their administrative requirements. The modifications of the exercises included (1) confining the test to the most critical skills, (2) replicating measures of critical skills, and (3) reducing equipment and facilities requirements. Results showed the modified exercises to have greater measurement reliability, as indicated by both internal consistency and test-retest statistics.
