Computer Tapes from NCHSR (National Center for Health Services Research) Research

The NCHSR has made available data tapes for sale to the public on projects that are applicable to a wide variety of research, training, and other health care-related activities. The tapes were developed from research conducted by NCHSR grants and contracts. The brochure represents the first updated listing since 1981 of computer tapes and describes content and documentation. Tapes contain information on specific study characteristics and have been included for their potential usefulness as data bases in longitudinal studies. The majority are formatted for use on mainframe computer systems as Extended Binary Code Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) files; a few tapes are formatted in the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). Data from substudies of selected projects, such as the 1977 National Medical Care Expenditure Survey and the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey, are also available as Statistical Analysis System (SAS) files. SAS tapes are produced to provide the user with a faster and easier route for extrapolation of data. The brochure will be updated periodically.
