Inventory of Long-Term Care Places, 1986 EBCDIC Files. Documentation and Codebooks

The 1986 Inventory of Long-Term Care Places (ILTCP) is the first of a series of public use data files to be released from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES). The Inventory is a comprehensive listing of nursing and personal care homes and facilities for the mentally retarded in the 50 States and the District of Columbia and constitutes the unedited sampling frame for the Institutional Population Component (IPC) of NMES. Work on the Inventory was cosponsored by the National Center for Health Services Research, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Health Care Financing Administration. The ILTCP data consists of 56,728 facility-level records and includes facility identifiers, facility and patient/resident characteristics, and administrative and field follow-up data. The tape holds two Extended Binary Code Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) data files, Part 1 and Part 2, containing 45,243 records and 58 variables, and 11,485 records and 27 variables, respectively, depending on final status coding. The tape also holds documentation, and codebooks for the data files. The file documentation describes NMES and the ILTCP, ILTCP limitations and data collection procedures, and file structure and content. These data are also available as Statistical Analysis System (SAS) files.
