The first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) collected data from a national probability sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. The survey, which included a standardized medical examination, took place from 1971 through 1974 and was augmented by an additional national sample in 1974-75. The NHANES I Epidemiologic Followup Study (NHEFS) was designed to investigate the association between factors measured at the baseline survey (NHANES I) with the development of specific health conditions. The followup study population included the 14,407 participants who were 25 to 74 years of age when they were examined in NHANES I. Data collection activities for the followup were conducted from 1982 to 1984. The design of NHEFS consisted of five steps: tracing the subjects or their proxies; performing indepth interviews with subjects or their proxies; taking pulse, blood pressure, and weight measurements of subjects; obtaining hospital and nursing home records; and acquiring death certificates. The NHEFS Vital and Tracing Status Public Use Data Tape is a master file containing tracing, vital status, and demographic data for all 14,407 NHEFS respondents. In addition, it provides users with information on the availability of different survey components for each respondent. The data tape may be linked to all other NHEFS and NHANES I Public Use Data Tapes.
