Electrochemical Amination Reactions for Amino Acid Synthesis.

Research was directed toward determining the utility of electrochemically generated homogeneous catalysts capable of in situ forming aminyl radicals in acidic hydroxylamine containing electrolytes, which would then be available for free radical addition onto 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid and cinnamic acid to give dl-dopa and dl-phenylalanine. Two closely related electrochemical strategies were pursued for the in situ generation of aminyl radicals in the electrolytic cell catholyte. These approaches involved initially electrochemically generating Ti3+ or V3+ redox species which subsequently became chemically reoxidized by hydroxylamine with the simultaneous generation of aminyl radicals. Preliminary characterization of these electrochemically promoted amino acid synthesis reactions was performed via constant current electrolyses and potential step measurement techniques. The electrochemical requirements for achieving high Faradaic efficiencies for these reaction products were identified.
