Surface Defect Measurements of Computer Hard Disks.

摘要

The purpose of the Phase I research was to develop and test a non-contact optical scanning system for measuring the surface defects of a computer hard disk around one circular segment. These defects can affect the performance of a computer disk as the head tracks over the surface. The effects of signal to noise ratio, signal bandwidth, laser spot size, focusing errors, and disk rotation speeds were studied. The research showed the feasibility of a high speed disk scanning system with high resolution and high throughput rate. The potential application of the research is the development of an in-process quality control instrument used to detect and characterize hard disk surface defects while still being fast enough to maintain a one minute throughput rate. Such an instrument could improve disk production quantities as well as disk surface qualities.
