Information on Bus Transit Operations: Dwell Time and On-Time Performance

The mass transit industry is looking for methods to reduce the losses expected to be incurred by a probable future cut in federal financial aid. Data were collected and analyzed for the report to test the effectiveness of two possible methods: (1) adjust the fare structure to include distance, time, and user type differentials; and (2) improve schedule reliability. Findings indicate that fare type and pavement method do not significantly affect dwell time. Bus adjusted arrival times were shown to follow a Gamma Distribution. A theory was proposed that adjusted arrival times are functions of the distance along a route, the location of the peak load point, and the headway.
