Creating DRG (Diagnosis Related Group)-Based Physician Reimbursement Schemes: A Conceptual and Empirical Analysis

The report summarizes two separate, but related, analyses: (1) a study of the feasibility of basing payment for inpatient physician services on Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), using a four state database for 1982; and (2) a study of the feasibility of basing payment for inpatient radiology, anesthesia and pathology services on DRGs using a (different) four state data base for 1984. These studies supported the Health Care Financing Administration's (HCFA) Reports to Congress on these topics.
