Comparison of Temperature Profiles Measured by Three Collocated Microwave Radiometers and Radiosonde

The results of a nine month intercomparison of the performance of three ground-based, passive microwave temperature profiles of different design are reported. Temperature profiles measured by the remote sensors are compared with those measured at standard times by radiosondes launched from the National Weather Service Forecast Office at Denver, Colorado. Differences in instrument performance are considered in terms of design, operating mode, and calibration methods employed by the various systems. Implications of the results upon the design of future operational temperature profilers are discussed.
