The Charles Sweeney House and the 26.5 acres upon which it stands were purchased from J.A. Sweeney in 1980 and are owned by the government with a life tenancy restriction for Lelia Sweeney who lives in the small modern house adjacent to the Charles Sweeney building. The property was purchased by the government because 'the...cabin played a significant role in the surrender events and should...be restored and utilized in the interpretive program'. The Sweeney cabin was 'moth-balled' in 1981, but the deterioration of the additions and visible movement in the sill plates of the original cabin required fabric investigation during the summer of 1987. The results of that research are included in the report.
