Wood Quality and Volume Production in Four 24-Year-Old Provence Trials with 'Pinus contorta'

Today Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) is the third most important tree species in Sweden, measured in terms of annual planting area. Planting is mainly concentrated to the north of latitude 59 degrees 30 min N although there are certain limitations to its use. South of this limit, planting is only permitted for research purposes. The aim of the present study is to elucidate: How the production and quality of a well defined provenance varies with locality in Sweden. The variation between provenances at the same locality. Differences between Pinus contorta provenances and Pinus sylvestris of local origin. The comparisons are carried out roduction, wood density, fiber characteristics, branching habit and straightness.
