Industry Outlook Report: Fishing Industry, Republic of Korea, 1986 (SPR-0404)

The Republic of Korea (ROK) harvested 3.7 million metric tons (t) of fish in 1986, a 19 percent increase over its 1985 catch of 3.1 million tons. In real terms, fishery products accounted for approximately 1.3 percent of the ROK's Gross National Product in 1986, the same as in 1985. However, the value-added growth rate of the fisheries sector increased by 12.6 percent, nearly double 1985's growth rate of 6.7 percent. This increase was attributed to increases in deepsea fisheries and aquaculture production. Of the ROK's four fishery sectors (coastal, deepsea, aquaculture, and inland waters), coastal fishermen caught over 1.7 million t of fish, shellfish and other aquatic products, nearly one half of the 1986 catch.
