Analysis of Annular Microstrip Antennas for Hyperthermic Applicators

An annular microstrip antenna in contact with the skin, is analyzed by using the exact image principle. The antenna is designed primarily for measurements of temperature profiles in the breast and hence to detect cancer. The current distributions on the strip is solved from the electric field integral equation. The Galerkin's method is applied with continuous trigonometrical basis functions and the consequent nearfield distributions for different antennas are plotted. The dependence of the focus size on the radius of the antenna is calculated. Also, it is shown that the focus can be reduced by using two annular rings together.
