The application of polymeric resins for the adsorption of cyanogen chloride was investigated. The investigated polymers were crosslinked resins containing basic amine groups. These resins were either commercially available or synthesized in the laboratory. The polymers were characterized with respect to their ion exchange capacity, swelling properties, air flow resistance and cyanogen chloride adsorption capacity. The cyanogen chloride adsorption capacity of some polymers was found to be superior to impregnated activated carbon while the air flow resistance of the larger polymeric beads is lower. The air flow resistance of the most promising resins increases by swelling of the beads in a humid atmosphere. The phenomenon thwarts their use in a gas mask canister as yet.
