No methods for microbial disinfection of vehicles and materials after a BW attack are available in the Dutch army yet. The aim of project was to evaluate whether methods in use for chemical decontamination would have sufficient microbiocidal potential too. Therefore, the disinfecting activity of chemical decontamination solution 2 (DS-2) was compared with the activity of the common disinfectants viz. sodium hypochlorite and formalin. The disinfecting activity was measured by the European Suspension Test (EST) and the Quantitative Carrier Test (QCT) with Bacillus globigii spores and E. coli bacteria. It was found that DS-2 both in the EST and QCT had minor disinfecting activity against B. globigii spores, while disinfecting activity towards E. coli bacteria was sufficient. It appeared that sodium hydroxide is an important disinfecting component of DS-2. Formalin (4%) had not enough disinfecting potential for rapid killing (within 15 min) of B. globigii spores, although the disinfecting potential towards E. coli bacteria was sufficient. Sodium hypochlorite, on the contrary, reduced both B. globigii spores and E. coli bacteria sufficiently (decimal reduction > 4 in 15 min).
