Organization and Delivery of Mental Health, Alcohol, and Other Drug Abuse Services Within Health Maintenance Organizations. Final Report. Volume 1

The National Institute of Mental Health, in collaboration with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, provided support for the analysis of a national survey conducted by InterStudy of Excelsior, Minnesota, describing the organization and delivery of mental health, alcohol, and drug abuse services in health maintenance organizations (HMO's) in calendar year 1985. The analysis describes in detail the benefit coverages, specific services and the organization delivery systems for such services in 247 HMOs who completed some portion of the survey questionnaire and who were operational for more than 1 year in 1985. The analysis also examined how such benefits and services vary with HMO characteristics, i.e., model type, size, age, profit status, Federal-qualification status, and corporate affiliation. The report also analyzed how benefits and services for alcohol abuse and alcoholism, other drug abuse, and mental illness vary with the community and medical care market environments in which they operate. This volume contains the final report summary.
