Review of the Environmental Safety of LAS (Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonate)

The report discusses analytical techniques available for identification of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), presents concentrations of LAS found in various environmental compartments, examines fate of LAS in the environment and likely effect on the ecosystem, and provides an assessment of the environmental acceptability of LAS, which is contained in detergents. The report is based on review of both published and unpublished literature and information and data. LAS is completely mineralized under aerobic conditions. Removal of LAS through efficient sewage treatment is high (95-99%). Concentrations in freshwater environments are low and unlikely to cause any effect on the ecosystem. Most species are unlikely to be affected at levels found in marine waters. Levels of LAS in sludge-amended soils are unlikely to have any effect on plants. Assessment concludes that at current level of use, LAS is unlikely to pose a hazard to the environment. The conclusion is based on review and 25 years of continuous use with no revealed deleterious environmental effects.
