Analytical Studies of Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls

An analytical study of reinforced concrete shear wall buildings was undertaken. It was intended both to present a realistic assessment of the behavior of this type of building and to develop applicable analysis techniques. In the first part of the report, experimental results from a full-scale reinforced concrete building are presented and analyzed. The experiment was conducted as a part of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Research Program in Tsukuba, Japan. In the test building, lateral loads were resisted by the interaction of three open frames and a shear wall located at the center of the building parallel to the loading direction. The second part of the report covers a finite element analysis of reinforced concrete shear walls. The finite element program developed is used to analyze several isolated shear wall specimens including a model of the first three stories of the wall of the Tsukuba reinforced concrete building.
