Effect of Microadditives on Asphalt Mixtures

In the industry/university cooperative research project, the moisture resisting effects of 58 liquid microadditives and polymers were measured and evaluated in asphalt concrete mixtures. Indirect tensile strength, resilient modulus, and visual estimation of the debonded asphalt after moisture damage were used to calculate the adhesion change and cohesion change that result from moisture susceptibility. The fatigue life, toughness and wheelpath rutting ratios were calculated and compared to the adhesion and cohesion changes of a particular mixture in order to better assign the additive effectiveness characteristics. Results indicate that the problem of loss of highway performance life due to moisture damage can be solved to a very large reliability by employing dual microadditive selection that gives wet performance properties which are somewhat superior to the dry properties.
