Community Economic Development: Building Capacity through Stronger Partnerships

The Information Service Report is part of a technical assistance grant from the Department of Commerce, the purpose of which was to conduct state workshops on economic development issues germane to that state or region. The report is based primarily on a conference held by the National Conference for Urban Economic Development in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, May 24, 1988 on 'Community Economic Development: Building Capacity Through Stronger Partnerships,' with supplemental information on some of the topics discussed from other sources. The theme of the program was how community economic development groups can work together to build stronger neighborhoods. Because communities that are economically depressed obviously have few resources, any development activities -- if they are to be successful -- need coordination and help from a variety of sources, particularly residents, merchants, government, private investors.
