Obesity, defined as an abnormally high proportion of body fat, is associated with a high frequency of metabolic disturbances and elevated risk of disease and death due to cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Not only the quantity of body fat, but also the pattern of body fat distribution is considered to be a predominant factor for the metabolic disorders and cardiovascular complications associated with obesity. The thesis evaluates the various techniques that are currently being used for the determination of body composition in humans, with an emphasis on radiological techniques.
