Demographic Characteristics of a Maine Woodcock Population and Effects of Habitat Management

A population of American woodcock (Scolopax minor) was studied on 3,401 ha area, in northeastern Maine from 1976 through 1985. The purpose of the study was the need to describe the breeding population dynamics of woodcock and assess the effects of habitat management. Information is presented on population size, population age and sex structure, breeding male behavior, production, the relation between singing-ground surveys and actual population size, and the response of the local population to habitat management.
