The report presents a short summary of the activities and outcome of the two-day workshop on Compact Disc--Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) conducted by The George Washington University under a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) on March 31 and April 1, 1988. The focus was on optical-based CD-ROM, and specifically on using the medium to develop information storage and retrieval systems. Of special interest here is the potential for application of CD-ROM in gathering and distributing fugitive and specialized research information. It was concluded that there should be some centralization of services and functions among the major libraries, particularly the university libraries that receive support from NSF, FEMA, and other federal agencies. These could include the preparation of a thesaurus, setting standards for equipment selection, central mastering, and pooling of data sets in order to fill up a single disc.
