The growing demand for short-fiber pulp has led to an increased price of the pulp in relation to long-fiber pulp. As a result, the value of birch pulpwood relative to conifer pulpwood has risen, and finally, the price relation between birch- and conifer pulpwood has also gone up. Presently (1987/88) the price of birch pulpwood is higher than that of conifer pulpwood, expressed as the price free delivered mill per cubic meter solid volume under bark (cubic m fub). The purpose of the present study is as follows: to analyze the profitability of leaving birch stems on cleaning the young stand and to analyze the profitability of removing birch from mature forests 10 years before the final felling.
