Report of Archaeological Surveys in Two Tracts at Hopewell Furnace, National Historic Site, Berks and Chester Counties, Pennsylvania

This is a report of an archaeological survey of approximately 181 acres in Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Pennsylvania. Special attention was directed toward the many surviving charcoal-making sites in the project area, which are thought to have supplied fuel to Hopewell Furnace and other ironmaking sites in the area. A total of 38 features were identified, measured, described, and photographed. Of these, seven were identified as colliers' huts and 31 were identified as hearths, or a ratio of just under 4.5 hearths per hut. The author attempted to discern pattern and intent from the surface evidence.
