Distribution and Mortality of the West Indian Manatee 'Trichechus manatus' in the Southeastern United States: A Compilation and Review of Recent Information. Volume 1. The Atlantic Coast

Efforts directed towards the conservation of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) in the United States experienced major growth in the 1970's. The report summarizes data on manatee distribution and mortality in the southeastern United States. The Atlantic coast and Gulf coast waters provide convenient geographic divisions for the information. Reviews are presented from north to south for each coast, subdivided by State, and by region and county within Florida. Mortality data are presented first within each county. Each mortality narrative provides a general description of numbers of cases, causes of death, and locations. Maps detailing carcass recovery locations are included among tables and figures following the complete county narrative.
