Cultural Resources Inventory Survey of the Brigade Maneuver Area, Fort Stewart, Georgia

Archaeological research identified 44 previously unrecorded prehistoric and historic sites within the Brigade Maneuver Area at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Indian populations appear to have made sporadic use of the natural resources of the inner coastal plain locality from 800 - 10,000 years ago, while historic farmers raised crops, tended livestock, and extracted gum for the turpentine industry here during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One prehistoric site and two historic farmstead sites may contain significant archaeological data associated with a study of material culture, technology, subsistence adaptations, and settlement patterns in interior Georgia. Testing of subsurface deposits at these sites is recommended in order to determine whether they are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
