Phase I effort was directed toward the development of a communication network for home automation which addresses the broad requirements of 'smart' gas appliances and the interests of the gas industry. Work included evaluating approaches to distributing the communication medium, evaluating and comparing standard network topologies, and determining the best communication protocols for the application.
